L.E.A.D.E.R. is an organization founded by volunteers in August 2000. The purpose of our intervention was to reduce the incidence of children being killed on our roads directly related to inadequate driver training. On today’s roads, we lose more children 14 to 24 years of age to automobile accidents than any other cause. This is a major health issue for our young people.
The L.E.A.D.E.R. driving program is located in Cumming, Georgia. The program was initiated by Dr. Michael Hogan, an orthopedic surgeon and developed with a dedicated group of community leaders with guidance and oversight provided by a Board of Directors consisting of a cross section of recognized leaders from both government and industry.
Classes we offer to the community:
- We are partnered with the Forsyth County Board of Education to provide an integrated program of classroom training and interactive simulation training. Additional hours of road experience are offered through registered local driving schools or by parents downloading a program through the Department of Driver Services. A Certificate of Driver Education and high school Carnegie credits can be obtained for those children who successfully complete the program. State Farm Insurance is now offering a 10% discount if a students successfully completes this course through Forsyth County Schools.
- Driver Awareness Classes are offered in our county to young people 14 and 16 years of age prior to receiving their learners driving permit. Our program exposes them to basic good driving practices and teaches the students good driving habits that we anticipate will last for life. It will reduce the tendency to use poor driving habits before learned elsewhere.
Presently we have 24 brand new fully interactive driving simulators and boast the largest simulator lab in the United States. Our program continues to work hard to achieve and improve our goal of reducing children’s deaths on our roads.
Since initiating the school program we have had more than 8000 students participate in the program.
The members of the volunteer Board of Directors work to create the structure required to make our first LEADER Center a reality. This ranges from obtaining funding, facilities and equipment, to working with the effected educational institutions, to forming the appropriate 501(c)(3) non-profit entity.
The day-to-day leadership and work associated with the creation and guidance of LEADER is performed by the members of the Board of Directors. The functional activities of LEADER are performed by these individuals.
In order to provide appropriate guidance and oversight, LEADER has formed a volunteer Board of Governors. Our Board is made up of a cross section of leaders from both Government and Industry. Their leadership and guidance create a bond between the school system, local government, and the community LEADER serves.
